We’re excited to invite you on a transformative journey through the seven chakras, the energy centers that govern everything from your emotional balance to your physical vitality. Over the summer, we’ll be exploring each chakra, diving into its unique qualities, how it impacts your life, and how you can harness its energy through mindful movement, breathwork, and intention.
What Is a Chakra, Anyway?
Chakras are often described as spinning wheels or discs of energy that align along the spine, from the base to the crown of the head. Each one acts like a vortex, receiving and radiating energy that affects both your physical body and emotional state. Most chakras spin horizontally, like a fan or wheel turning outward from the front and back of the body. But two, the Root Chakra at the base of the spine and the Crown Chakra at the top of the head, spin vertically, connecting you downward into the earth and upward into the cosmos. When your chakras are flowing freely and spinning in balance, your life energy (or prana) can move through you with ease, bringing clarity, vitality, and connection on every level.
Understanding the Root of It All:
Meet Your First Chakra
The Root Chakra sits at the base of your spine — think tailbone and pelvic floor. It’s the foundation of the entire chakra system, connected to our sense of safety, survival, and belonging. It governs your most basic needs: food, shelter, stability, connection to the earth, and your physical body.
Muladhara is your energetic “home base.” It’s where we root down so we can rise up.
When your Root Chakra is aligned, you feel:
✅ Grounded
✅ Secure and stable
✅ Trusting of life and its timing
✅ At home in your body
✅ Connected to nature and the present moment
You’re less likely to be thrown off by change and more likely to respond to life from a place of calm.
When the Root Chakra Is Out of Balance…You may feel:
❌ Anxious or scattered
❌ Fearful or constantly worried
❌ Physically exhausted or disconnected from your body
❌ Struggling with routines, boundaries, or financial instability
❌ Overeating or feeling sluggish — or the opposite, feeling too “floaty” or ungrounded
Times of transition or stress can often lead to an imbalance in the Root Chakra, making it harder to feel stable and secure.
Practices to Nurture Your Root Chakra
Here’s how to invite more Muladhara energy into your day, on and off the mat:
Yoga Poses
- Mountain Pose (Tadasana)
- Garland Pose (Malasana)
- Child’s Pose (Balasana)
- Warrior I & II (Virabhadrasana I & II)
- Legs up the wall (Viparita Karani) for deep rest and regulation
Walk barefoot in nature
Let your feet connect with the earth. It’s called earthing and it’s deeply healing.
Color therapy
Wear or visualize the color red. Decorate your space with grounding tones, brick red, earthy browns, or warm terracottas.
Listen to grounding music or sound bowls tuned to 396 Hz, a frequency believed to clear fear and stimulate safety.
Affirmations
Say them aloud in the mirror or journal them:
“I am safe.”
“I am grounded and stable.”
“I trust the process of life.”
“I belong here.”
Your Invitation
This week, we invite you to notice how grounded you feel in your day-to-day life. Are you rushing from one thing to the next? Feeling floaty or forgetful? Or are you taking time to breathe, eat slowly, feel your feet on the ground, and connect with others?
Try adding a root-boosting tea to your morning ritual, or come roll out your mat at Happy Hour Yoga for a grounding flow.
